Gifts to Building Community for Student Success in Mathematics and Statistics contribute to...
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosts a weekly “cafés” on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, staffed by faculty and student tutors to build community among students taking mathematics and statistics courses and to provide accessible support for student success, especially in introductory courses for statistics, precalculus, and calculus. The cafés serve ALL students at CSUMB, as every freshman is required to take a mathematics or statistics course their first year, and many students, including STEM-intending students and future teachers, take additional mathematics or statistics courses once they transfer to CSUMB. Students who visit the cafés regularly saw improvements in grades and better connections with other students and instructors. In fall 2023 alone, the cafés served 121 unique students for a total of 1000 visits throughout the semester. Students called the cafés “a privilege,” “a great resource,” and a “fun place” to work on their mathematics and statistics coursework.

Our Department is committed to offering this valuable opportunity for students into the next academic year, but your donations will provide the additional funds needed to pay tutors and, if possible, pizza so that students can feed their minds and bodies at the cafés.
