Gifts to Scholarships for Biology, Agriculture and Chemistry students contribute to...

The Biology program launched in 2009 with 17 students, and quickly grew to be one of the largest majors on the CSUMB campus. It was elevated to the Department of Biology and Chemistry in 2019, and is now called the Department of Biology, Agriculture, and Chemistry (BAC) which houses two majors: Agriculture Plant and Soil Sciences (AGPS), and Biology (BIO). The Department also has Chemistry, Biology, and AGPS minors. It supports all Chemistry courses, both lower division and upper division thereby reaching students across the College of Science and beyond as lower division general education, and the Chemistry prerequisites required for other majors. There are five full time tenure track Biology faculty, three full time tenure track AGPS faculty, and two full time tenure track Chemistry faculty who conduct high level cutting edge research with students in independent research labs. The Department supports many students in research endeavors in individual labs and is an exemplar for Course Based Undergraduate Research experiences (CURES). It has a number of grant supported activities that allow students to perform high level research during the summer months. As many of the students in the BAC program are first generation and hold jobs while in school, the Department endeavors to raise money to provide $1000 scholarships to help support students in need.
